Maison Fatien Père et Fils

In a cobbled street in the historic heart of Beaune is the family residence and ancient cellars of the Fatien family. Maison Fatien was founded by Raymond & Charly Fatien in 1999. Descended from a Burgundy family, they are both great lovers of the region and its wines.

"When we decided to launch the business, our three guiding principles were first quality, second quality and third quality... Quite simply because if there is any wine left in the cellar, we're the ones who will drink it!" – Raymond Fatien.

Charly Fatien and his family are the custodians of 4 hectares of vines spread across several of the surrounding villages including Meursault, Rully, Volnay, Pommard and Gevrey Chambertin.

These are worked exclusively by Charly himself with almost no additional help other than at harvest time.

In addition to the family vineyards, some grape purchases are made. However, they must meet Charly’s exacting standards regarding not only the quality but also his fastidious approach to working in the vineyard.

Charly Fatien makes wines that he is passionate about. Full bodied and designed for ageing. His wines are nurtured with devoted attention in his medieval cellars in the heart of Beaune.

Driven by their taste for prestigious Burgundy wines, the Fatien’s have not held back in their determination to produce top quality wines.

The finest possible facilities were established right from the very first harvest to create optimum conditions for a superior product. But the most important aspect is 'time'.

They have given themselves time for their investment to bear fruit. Respect for the rhythm of nature is essential for the production of exceptional wines.

"Quality begins with low yields on the vines whether that be for the wines from our own vineyards or for the grapes we buy in. Control of the development of the vine is what really counts. That, and the important decision of when precisely to harvest.

The most important aspect is for everything to be well thought out and to obey the laws of nature. The objective is minimum interference, to let the wine take its own time. The ageing of the reds, for example, takes two years.

There are no added yeasts only what Mother Nature provides. I do not fine or filter my wines, they are as natural as possible.”

MAISON FATIEN PÈRE ET FILS RANGE

Bourgogne Aligoté 2018

The vines are located in the village of Volnay and owned by the Fatien family and only very small quantities are produced.

Rully 2016

Considered the flagship Village of the Côte Chalonnaise. Charly carefully selects his grape purchases from trusted growers who work to the same exacting standards in the vineyard.

Meursault Cromin 2014

The Cromin climat is situated in the north part of the appellation near the village of Meursault and halfway up the slope. No other village in the Côte d’Or offers such a variety of great white wines. A full bodied wine with generous aromas and concentrated flavours. A trusted grower enables around five barrels to be made in most vintages.

Meursault 1er Cru les Genevrières 2012

Considered one of the best Meursault climats with an area under vine of 16.5ha which is entirely planted with Chardonnay. The east to southeast aspect of the vineyard at the southern end of Meursault gives plenty of morning sunshine during the growing season. Barrel aged for at least 12 months with around 20% of the barrels being new oak.

Bourgogne 2017

Family vineyards in the villages of Volnay, Pommard and Savigny provide the grapes for around fifteen barrels in most vintages. Like all of the reds under the Fatien label they spend two years in oak barrels of which 25% are new.

Gevrey Chambertin 2015

Considered one of the best wines of the Côte de Nuits. The commune of Gevrey Chambertin boasts the greatest number of Grand Crus in Burgundy. The vineyard for this village level wine is from the mid-slope and exposed to the south east. Shallow rocky soils give added finesse and elegance with enormous character and minerality. Just like the Nuits Saint Georges Charly chooses to barrel age for 24 months.

Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru les Rues de Chaux 2012

This small 2.1ha vineyard is located just outside the town of Nuits Saint Georges towards the hamlet of Chaux. It is on the east facing mid-slope allowing an even ripening of the grapes, allowing rich flavours to develop whilst maintaining the acidity. As with all Charly’s Nuits Saint George wines he chooses to barrel age for 24 months in new oak to insure a good integration, allowing the oak to mellow out and not overwhelm the wine.

Coteaux Bourguignons 2017

Village level white Burgundy produced from a plot of around half a hectare with just six barrels produced in 2017. Around 20% new oak barrels and aged for twelve months prior to bottling.

Mercurey 2015

Renowned generally for Pinot Noir (543ha) there are also great wines made from Chardonnay (106ha). Again, made with purchased grapes that are vinified by Charly and aged in his cellars.

Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes 2014

Les Charmes is at the southern end of the commune bordering Puligny-Montrachet and next to Les Genevrières. The vines receive good exposure to the morning sun on the gentle slope which also gives some protection from the afternoon sun. This warm and then cooler temperature allows on long slow ripening period retaining acidity but at the same time allowing a rich complex flavour to develop. Barrel ageing for 12 months with around two barrels are made per vintage.

Pommard 1er Cru les Rugiens 2015

The Fatien family are proud owners of a parcel of 0.08ha (out of 12ha) of vines in the climat of Les Rugiens. This 1er Cru within the appellation of Pommard in the Côte de Beaune is one of the most highly rated and considered by many to be worthy of Grand Cru classification. Full bodied and very rounded with an exceptional capacity for ageing. Just one barrel is made in most vintages with barrel ageing for 24 months in new oak.

Volnay 2014

Depending on climatic conditions a parcel of just 0.25ha provides enough grapes for five barrels. The Fatien vineyard is on the upper slope just above the Premier Crus near the Village.

Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru les Didiers 2015

A 2.4ha vineyard is a monopole of the charity organisation Hospices de Nuits which dates back to the 13th century. The vineyard is tended by Domaine des Hospices de Nuits Saint Georges and they make the wine that is then sold at the annual charity auction. The barrels purchased by Charly are then matured in the family cellars prior to bottling.

Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru les Boudots 2015

One of the northernmost climats in the Nuits Saint George appellation bordering Vosne-Romanee. The 6.5ha vineyard is on the mid-slope below Les Damodes 1er Cru and next to one of Vosne-Romanee’s best 1er Cru climats Aux Malconsorts. The vines are generally angled towards the morning sun allowing ripeness to develop during the day and cooler temperatures in the evenings. The well drained thin gravel and limestone marl soil leads to deep rooted vines seeking water and reducing vigour. Ultimately this also gives a yield of smaller grapes that have highly concentrated juice which make excellent wines.
